From the 14th of May to the 14th of June 2018 the National Smile Month campaign runs in the UK, promoting good oral health and spreading awareness. To play our part, we’re listed some top tips on how preventive dentistry can help to maintain oral health and keep a smile on your face!
Regular check-ups
It doesn’t take too long, and they don’t happen too often, but making sure you attend check-up appointments with your dentist can play an essential part in maintaining excellent oral health. In these sessions your dentist or hygienist will assess the health of your teeth and gums, clear any build up of plaque and inform you of any potential problems.
Advice on teeth and gum care
Whatever issues you are having with your teeth or gums, your dentist can offer plenty of advice on how to improve oral health and maintain that lovely smile! Even small adjustments such as changing the way you brush your teeth or introducing new oral health techniques such as inter-dental flossing can go a long way to improving and protecting your teeth and gums – so don’t be afraid to ask!
Spotting issues
One of the most important benefits of preventive dentistry is that a trusted professional will be on hand to check your teeth and gums and spot any potential issues. So, whether you have a build up of plaque, a risk of tooth decay or the alignment of your teeth could cause potential issues, your dentist or hygienist will be able to identify any warning signs and work to prevent future problems occurring.
Screening for oral cancer
Although oral cancer is common, it is also very curable when spotted and treated at an early stage. Making sure to attend scheduled appointments with your dentist or hygienist will help to pick up any signs of oral cancer symptoms as early as possible and has the potential to save your life.
