Dental Veneers Kent
Veneers are a very popular dental treatment for tooth function and appearance. They can have a tremendous effect on the way you look and on your confidence.
What are Dental Veneers?
Both healthy teeth and teeth that have minimal damage, like small chips, can benefit from these functional and aesthetic tooth covers. Veneers are extremely versatile, and can disguise many imperfections, including mis-alignment and stained teeth.
Dental veneers are often made from porcelain or composite resin, and they’re essentially thin shells that we attach to the front surface of your teeth — covering up small damage and aesthetic shortcomings. The versatility of veneer treatment, combined with their instant smile-boosting effect, is the reason why they are so often featured on TV makeover programmes.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Veneers in Kent?
Veneers are a worthwhile treatment for many of our patients, but unfortunately, they’re not suited for everyone. There are some instances where we will recommend treatments other than dental veneers, which may include the following:
- A tooth has decay or is in an area that has gum disease. These must be treated with fillings or by root canal before proceeding with dental veneer treatment.
- A tooth is too broken to support a veneer. In this instance, a crown may be a preferred treatment.
- A tooth has little enamel left. A veneer can’t stick to a tooth properly if this is the case.
- A patient has bruxism. Grinding or clenching teeth can damage veneers.
How We Place Dental Veneers at Southview Dental Care
When our patients are comfortable, dental treatments are more pleasant for everyone. Patients coming to us for dental veneers will be given a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and the area around it, allowing us to prepare your teeth. The dentist carefully removes a very thin layer of enamel to make room for the veneers.
Once this step is completed, the dentist will take an impression, or mould, of the area around the tooth (or teeth) that will be treated. We send the impression over to a skilled dental technician, who will craft your veneer so that it is a perfect fit.
Making the perfect veneer takes a little time, so until your permanent dental veneers are ready, we will fit you with temporary veneers to wear in the meantime. As soon as your new veneers are ready, we’ll have you come back to the dental practice for a fitting. If you’re happy with how the veneers look, and we determine that they fit as they are supposed to, we will bond the veneers in place with a special dental cement.
Caring for Your New Dental Veneers
Your dental veneers may feel a little strange for a few days as they are unlikely to be exactly the same size and shape as your original tooth or teeth. However, you will soon become used to them, and what feels weird now, will soon become the norm. If your dental veneers feel uncomfortable, please let us know, and we will check them for you.
Veneers can last for many years as long as you care for them properly. As with your natural teeth, proper care involves brushing twice a day, and cleaning around the sides and under the gumline. If you’re concerned about any aspect of caring for your new dental veneers, we are happy to advise you on the best dental hygiene practices.
Preventative dentistry is part of caring for your dental veneers too. Seeing the dental hygienist on a regular basis as recommended by your dentist will help you take care of your new veneers for years to come.
