Taking Care of Your Dentures

Taking Care of Your Dentures

Dentures are a set of removable false teeth that are placed over your gums to occupy the gaps caused by missing teeth. As well as granting you a new smile, this is especially helpful for lessening any problems caused by gaps involving your eating, speech and remaining teeth.

However, just because dentures are false doesn’t mean they require less care than real teeth. Dentures require close attention to keep them clean and functioning, which you can maintain by following these simple tips:

  1. Incase you were ever to drop them, keep your dentures safe by cleaning them over a sink filled with water for minimal damage.
  2. To remove loose traces of food, rinse your dentures thoroughly through warm water.
  3. Denture cleansers are available for deeper cleaning to avoid any damage. Products such as conventional toothpaste, soap, vinegar and bleach should be avoided when cleaning.
  4. Moisten a denture brush to gently clean over the surfaces of your dentures, then rinse and brush in warm water. Remember not to use a soft bristled toothbrush and avoid brushing too hard to avoid harm to metal or plastic components.
  5. Before inserting your dentures, brush your natural teeth, gums and tongue with a fluoride toothpaste to eliminate plaque and promote mouth circulation and positive oral health.
  6. Finally, for a refreshed feeling, rinse your mouth out with mouthwash.

If you follow these steps, you will receive the full benefits of your dentures. Modern dentures have been developed to provide a more natural appearance and fit more comfortably than ever before, so it’s important to take proper care.

Getting your dentures is often a straight forward procedure, however, if ever any of the following issues occur, please contact your dentist:

  • Dentures click whilst you talk
  • Your dentures begin to show signs of wear and tear
  • Your dentures are causing you discomfort
  • You feel your dentures no longer fit comfortably or tend to slip
  • You begin to notice symptoms of tooth decay or gum disease
